In her classic book, Looking into the Well, Maureen Conroy states,
“The goal of supervision is to help spiritual directors to grow in self-awareness and interior freedom in order to stay with directees’ experiences and to be attentive to God during direction sessions.”
As persons entrusted with the welfare of the directees we see, we have a responsibility to obtain supervision, either the individual or group variety, or both! In fact, all those directors who see directees on behalf of the Spiritual Life Center are required to receive some type of supervision, whether through the Center or from another source. (The Center offers both individual and peer group supervision.) Other directors are welcome to make use of our supervisory programs (please contact Oscar Brockmeyer at [email protected] for details).
During a Peer Group Supervision session, you will be a member of a group of 6 to 8 other directors. Your group will be led by a trained supervisor. It meets on a monthly basis. Directors take turns presenting a situation or case to the group, one presentation per session. The case is then discussed as members notice the areas of joy, inner freedom, gratitude, peace, joy, movement of the Spirit, and areas of both darkness and light that are experienced by the director. Everyone learns valuable lessons from the experience.
If you are not a member of one of our Peer Supervision groups, and you want the company of colleagues, now is the time to join as groups are reforming for the fall. You can click on the link below to initiate the process. If you have questions, contact Oscar Brockmeyer at [email protected].
Peer supervision is offered free of charge to directors who see directees on behalf of the Center--we ask for a donation from others. We look forward to having you with us as you continue to develop your growing edges as a spiritual director.
